new york or bust.

summer is here! have you noticed? for many that means the traditional summer vacation.... have you got any exciting plans? we are busy readying ourselves & preparing for a quick trip to the big apple. i've been there before, but never with the little kiddos in tow. any tips/suggestions? how about kid friendly attractions & must dos? of course, serendipity's & a baseball game are at the top of the list... but other than that, we are wide open. i'd love to hear about your favorite hot spots & must sees!

Serendipity's was closed when we went there in March. My advice would be to leave the kids in the hotel with your mom and head to Bloomies. Have fun!

We really loved the double decker bus tour. It was great that you could get on and off whenever you wanted and you got to see all the major tourist places. Ride uptop if you do it. And the ngiht one is awesome- but not sure how kids would handle it.

The Natural History Museum (you could do it in a day), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (pick 2 or 3 exhibits you'd like to see and stick to those, rather than try and see the whole place. Impossible). Tickets are $$$ (how old are your kids?) but there's really nothing like a broadway show: Mary Poppins, MamaMia, Lion King, Mermaid. SKIP: Rent, Chicago, Chorus Line. Greys Papaya Hot Dogs and Famous Rays pizza (all the Rays are about the same). A baseball game at Yankee Stadium, whether a fan or not, is great, too. And it will all be torn down this fall!

central park zoo! the typical tourist stuff - ellis island, statue of liberty, empire state building - are all fun, depending on how much walking/stairs you want to do with little ones :)

Central park zoo!! And, of course, also, at central park, is the statue of Balto (the sled dog), and, I was obsessed with him growing up, so, I LOVED seeing Balto--I don't know if you're kids know who he was, but, it's kind of a neat story nonetheless.... Ellis island and FAO Schwartz for sure. Have so much fun in the Big Apple!

I've never been but looking forward to hearing about it. Have fun!

We take our kids to NYC often, and their favorite part is ALWAYS the Toys R Us store in Times Square. It's HUGE inside, and has a ferris wheel inside, plus a giant animatronic dinosaur upstairs. It's fun for everyone!

If you can spend the $$$, go see The Lion King on Broadway. I thought my kids wouldn't make it through the whole show, but they were absolutely enthralled with it and ask me weekly when we can go see it again.

Too bad you only have boys, because the American Girl Doll store is also amazing. Have fun!!

I agree, FAO, Central Park Zoo, and Central park to run around get those wiggles out... the Met is awesome. Natural history would probably be a hit with boys!
Good luck and have a blast!
We are heading to Providence RI for a weekend trip, we are skipping up to Boston too to see the Aquarium, since we saw a PBS special my girl is obsessed! HAVE FUN!

The Peanut Butter and Company restaurant is a great place to go have lunch with kids and get a few fun gifts...I looked up their website and unfortunately the pictures don't do it justice... but here is the link...

You will have to surf around on their site to get a good idea of what it is like...

I also vote for Greys Papaya :)

I believe Serendipity is back open now. It is a really long wait, though, so be prepared. (And I think they were closed for health code violoations.) Buttercup bakery and Magnolia bakery are fun and yummy. You can't miss Chinatown and all of the knock-off goodies!

Too bad you will be here while we're out West! It would be fun to meet up.

The big Toys R Us on Times Square is a must. My kids love just riding the subway, taxis and bike rickshaws. Also a Disney musical or too. The Hershey store, the M&M store, and Central Park for hours.

Have a blast!

We used to live outside of NYC and we have 2 little boys who we took into the city as often as we could. Our favorite place was Central park. There are about 15 different playgrounds throughout the park and an old Carousel that is right out of a movie set. You can buy cotton candy and ice-cream. They also have an amusement park that is in the Wollman Rink (the ice-skating rink) in the summer time. Toys R Us was a hit and Dylan's Candy Bar is very fun for kids they have every type of candy you can imagine and you can also get Frozen Hot Chocolate here and avoid the wait at Serendipity. Have a greattime! There is nothing like NYC!

I have never been, but I imagine the boys would love FAO Schwartz (sp?)

You could show them King Kong (the earliest version so it wouldn't be too scary.. ) and take them to the Crysler Building... Or sorry, the Empire State Building. I also think the Statue of Liberty is a must with kids.

One of my favorite memories of New York is when my husband discovered a giant tango/dance lesson in Central Park. I came over and we danced the night away (or at least an hour away) while the kids played and chased fire flies.

It was pretty magical! I hope you stumble upon something equally awesome!!! Have FUN! And just go ahead and leave your bra at home. It's much to hot and sticky for such conventions!!!

P.S. Serendipity requires that each person order something. So don't get any funny ideas of sharing one of their gigantic desserts! (We walked out last time because we had 6 people (3 little kids) and they wouldn't let us order only 3 or 4 items!!!

Have a fabulous time in NY, that was one of the places we went on the East Coast last summer. I had a girlfriend give me a quick tour of the city so sorry, I have no great advice for you. It was a tough city to manage with 2 strollers. This summer I'm taking the kids to Australia to visit with my family we can't wait.

I ditto skipping Serendipity. I went there once and it was a very long wait, the food was marginal, the frozen hot chocolate good, but all in all completely overrated.

Brooklyn industries and the breakfast place down the street is a place I hit EVERY time....love it there.

Josh and I probably passed 5 different playgrounds while wandering Central Park, and we only covered about 1/4 of it.

I must still be a kid, but you gotta hit FAO Schwartz! Such a fun place! Even has the huge floor piano from the movie BIG!

I'd like to come along in your suitcase! We didn't take little kids, just the big ones. Our favorite was the baseball games we attended - OF COURSE! I think your little ones would enjoy any of the fairies. The Natural History Museum would have been a blast if we had slept at all during the night. Little kids would definitely dig it! Have SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my vote is for the FREE Bon Jovi concert in Central Park on July 12th!! :)

Oh, my gosh, with kids??? The American Museum of Natural History, without a doubt! They'll love it, and so will you! And FAO Schwartz, the famous toy store.

Hey, I sent you an e-mail regarding the favorite things swap. I never got the original about my partner!

BTW, the "C" train uptown from Penn Station should take you right to the back door of the museum. Be sure you ask, or look at the subway map, though. I haven't been there in years, but that's how I used to go.

Take the kids to a fun show. Half price tickets are available in front of the Broadway Marriott the day of the show!

Peanut Butter and Company in Greenwich Village is fun . . every imaginable combination of peanut butter sandwiches. Plus, Global Table is across the street for you to shop.

Just took my 13 year old son there in March...
Go to Soho and have breakfast at Balthazar... the BEST French Toast (make a reservation). My son LOVED this MUCH BETTER than Serendipity!!! Lots of locals at balthazar... go for an EARLY breakfast before crowds. Do not miss the Union Square green market... yummy FRESH stuff to eat (he is still talking about the apple and pear donuts- in season at the time) and loads of great local produce... your boys will love this... park right there too.
DO NOT MISS the Shake Shack... look up address... kids LOVE this and they have a web cam... you can eat and watch yourself! Lastly, I just saw on the Food Network a place on the Lower East Side called Doughnut Plant. It looks sooooo good... (Tres leches doughnuts anyone???) might be a fun side trip. All the other stuff sounds great... but do some local stuff too! Don't miss Central Park! Can you tell have 3 boys who love to eat!!!!

They will also LOVE the Natural Science Museum! Don't miss this either!!!

Bummer, wish I had seen this earlier. I would have recommended Dylan's Candy Bar for sure! A boat tour to see the Statue of Liberty - do not go to Ellis Island with little kids - uGH! A ric-shaw ride in the evening back to your hotel. The slide at Central Park! Patsy's for dinner before walking across the street to Dylan's. NY with my kids was the best! We did all of the above & more in 2 days. Do the stuff we can't do & don't have in L.A.
