taking the plunge.

eleanor roosevelt once said "do one thing every day that scares you." so, with that in mind, today i took the plunge - literally... i went for a swim. no, not a casual, frolick-lick swim with the boys. but an intensive, calorie-burning, hunger-inducing swim. & unlike my boys, who are fish when it comes to the water, i'm the exact opposite. i feel more like a fish out of water when it comes to swimming. so, although it may have required several (internal) pep-talks, eventually i donned my bubblegum pink swim cap & googles and literally took the plunge. i have terrible technique, i'm still getting the whole breathing thing down, i can barely swim in a straight line, & i doubt i will ever master that fancy swim turn. but, today i did one thing that scares me. & hopefully, tomorrow, it won't scare me quite as much. as long as i keep singing "just keep swimming, just keep swimming," i think i might even start to enjoy this whole swimming thing.

I once heard a talk where the speaker quoted that and then said, "I'm always doing things that I don't know how to do - yet." That phrase really helps me when I'm trying something new. I may not know how to do it now, but if I keep trying, someday I will. Doing scary, hard things makes us stronger.

Swimming is such a valuable exercise! Glad to see you jumping straight in!
I will have to utilize that quote more often, yesterday I gave a shot to my baby goat and I was a little nervous about the whole experience but we did it, and he's better. What to do today???

Well you could have fooled me with your supposed lack of swimming skills. You did great--especially just coming off having a baby.

You sound like me in regards to swimming.
However I think you have inspired me today with your post. So I will hit the water tomorrow. I am terrified just thinking about it!
I need the exercise and the calorie burning.
Thanks for your post!

swimming is one of the best workouts ever. seriously love it. if you want to improve your stroke/form you should totally hook up with a masters swim team in your area. the coaches are always really helpful -- especially with beginners. and it's more fun when you have people in your lane to commiserate at the wall with in between sets. :)
